چکیده

Large scale distributed systems—including human and software organizations—benefit from top-down command and control in order to survive threats and damage. Yet achieving top-down management organization over millions of components is a significant challenge. This raises the question: is top down control a valid approach to the survival management of very large systems? We answer this question through the production of the ANDREA management architecture. ANDREA applies a novel architecture based on loosely coupled management relationships. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of ANDREA. We then evaluate its feasible operation and summarize its cost with scale. We also overview an application of the infrastructure. As a result of our studies, we assert that top-down control remains a viable and important aspect of management for very large and dynamic systems.

Survivable Network Systems: fin Emerging Discipline

Society is growing increasingly dependent upon large-scale, highly distributed systems that operate in unbounded network environments. Unbounded networks, such as the Internet, have no central administrative control and no unified security policy. Furthermore, the number and nature of the nodes connected to such networks cannot be fully known. Despite the best efforts of security practitioners,...

Software Component Survivability in Information Warfare

The need for software component survivability is pressing for mission-critical systems in information warfare. In this chapter, we describe how mission-critical distributed systems can survive component failures or compromises with malicious codes in information warfare. We define our definition of survivability, discuss the survivability challenges in a large mission-critical system in informa...

Survivable Network System Analysis: A Case Study

Survivability is receiving increasing attention as a key property of critical systems. Survivability is the capability of a system to fulfill its mission, in a timely manner, in the presence of attacks, failures, or accidents. We present a method for analyzing survivability of distributed network systems and an example of its application. Survivability requires system capabilities for intrusion...
